The first chapter focused on Paul's situation. While Paul addresses the uncertainty of his fate, he admits that he is full of thanksgiving, hope, and joy, because the gospel is spreading unabated, and it has been propelled by his chains. Paul was focused on giving his readers confidence and hope in the unstoppable gospel.
Paul now challenges the Philippians not to shrink back in intimidation and hesitation, but to move forward in hope and joy, working together as one community in the good fight of faith. He calls them to fearless obedience to the gospel, but he first affirms the necessity of humility and unity, in which Christ is our perfect example. He will go on to give further examples of Christlike humility, self-sacrifice, and cooperation and obedience in view of the gospel mission.

Paul is locked up in prison facing an uncertain future and there are some people around him who are stirring up trouble, trying to jeopardize Paul's life and ministry. Combine this with the challenges facing the believers in Philippi, and the Philippians might have wondered - how is the gospel "good news" for us? Is this religion a blessing or a curse? Were we wrong to put our faith in the apostle Paul, seemingly a powerful leader, and now a lowly prisoner? Perhaps they thought have we suffered so much for nothing? Paul did not hesitate to respond with boldness and confidence - not only has this situation not impeded his mission; it has actually propelled it. Why? Because Paul believed the gospel of Jesus Christ is an unstoppable force. So in a way, Paul relishes when he faces an obstacle, because he knows God will find a way through it (even if the way is hard).

The life of Moses is an epic story of someone who walks with God through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows over the course of a lifetime. In the life of Moses we learn about faith, doubt, calling, leadership and the heart of God. One Bible scholar notes how the life of Moses presents a series of striking antitheses: “He was the child of a slave, and the son of a queen. He was born in a hut, and lived in a palace. He inherited poverty, and enjoyed unlimited wealth. He was backward in speech, and talked with God. He was the giver of the Law, and the forerunner of Grace. He died alone on Mount Moab, and appeared with Christ in Judea. No man assisted at his funeral, yet God buried him.” The history of such a life is well worth attention, and the principles which underlie its antitheses, invite us to a considered study of it in this teaching series.
