When tragedy and sorrow strike, we often feel that God is far from us. We feel as if we’ve been abandoned. However, this Advent the story of Ruth reminds us that God offers hope to the hopeless. At the close of one of Scripture’s bleakest chapters, we get a glimpse of God’s mercy and faithfulness. The story of Ruth ultimately points us to what God has done for us through Christ our Redeemer. We have been brought from death to life, from despair to hope.

At the start of his Gospel, Matthew opens not with a description of Jesus’ birth but with a genealogy. What Matthew is doing is, he’s saying, “You can’t understand the birth of Christ, you can’t just jump right to the Christmas story, unless you first look at the family tree of Jesus.” During Advent, then, we are going to focus in on four quite unexpected, even shocking, women who are named in Jesus’ genealogy as a way of better understanding who Jesus is and what He was about.
